The Ticking Clock

Only one more day to go before I start seriously packing for my Tuesday departure. I'll spend the next ten days on-the-road, talking Orphan Trains, selling MAIL-ORDER KID.

I'll be gone from Oct. 11- Oct. 20, which means I'll miss two of my favorite fall activities:

The Nebraska Writers Guild's Fall Conference, this year in Ainsworth, Out West in the Sandhills where lunch is dinner and dinner's supper, where  blue jeans and boots are standard attire, and where deer hang about in throngs on the highway.

The (downtown) Omaha Lit Fest, this year promising Silk and Sawdust, the heart and mechanics of literature, especially writing.  Oh those panel discussions, those parties, those art exhibits! Oh, book making! Oh, typewriter nostalgia!

So I'll tear myself away from Omaha and Sandhills, head south to Beatrice, one of my favorite towns despite those recent reports of abuse at Beatrice State Developmental Center. That makes me want to weep.

But then I remember The Black Crow, that top-notch restaurant with the amazing menu where I'll eat dinner. Or is it supper? I'm wondering, will they have quail? They sometimes do. If not, there's always the best Caesar Salad in the world. I drool.

Here's my upcoming schedule:
